Mick Hart — "Road Journals",
Birmingham (England), Feb 17 2004 : "The title
track NO COMPROMISE was actually written a few years ago after
first meeting BEN HARPER who has given me wonderful guidance,
friendship and support ever since. the song was originally
written in mind as a duet with BEN but with his ever increasing
busy world shcedule it's been a little too difficult to get
it together. I'm sure we'll get something happening one day
down the track. On the first meeting with BEN at bluesfest
back in 99, the first thing he said was 'man, go to france!
you gotta go to france! they'll love you there!!'... and it
was from this intial advice and inspiration that led me to
relocating there from late 2002 to a large part of 2003 where
I wrote and came up for the inspiration for most of this record.
Therefore for me the album title NO COMPROMISE seemed most
fitting and to this day that track contains some of my favourite
lyrical moments. The message being to never compromise your
beliefs in any way and to follow your path as true an devoted
as possible no matter what. NO COMPROMISE to me is my most
positive album to date. Ii was in a totally different world,
living in PARIS and feeling blessed every day to be able to
do what i was doing. The support I was receiving from friends
and fans in FRANCE, HOLLAND, BEGIUM, GERMANY, THE UK, THE
USA and of course back in AUSTRALIA was also a constant source
of inspiration and positive energy. The lyrics to the majority
of the songs therefore celebrate choices in life and in many
ways the amazing things that were happening around me. However
it also expores the other sides of life too with the massive
problem of homelessness for people in those parts of the world.of
course it happens almost wherever we go but I was seriously
affected but some of the sights and suffering i saw around
me and two songs BED LONELY PEOPLE and NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE
are tracks dedicated to those suffering all over the world.
I think NOTHING LEFT TO LOSE has some of the best lyrics I've
ever written and this is definitely one of my favourite album
tracks. It was recorded totally live at around 2am and the
spirit just feels so beautifully in the zone. We are very
proud of that one! Musically we had an awesome amount of fun
making this record. Particularly the groove and reggae stuff
which is obviously kind of a new direction on record for me.
I have always played around with it a little live but felt
totally inspired to explore these styles a little more and
get them down for the album. EVAN and MATT were perfect for
this kind of energy and we love the vibe we have achieved
on some of these tracks like EMPTY AS IT COMES, OVER YOUR
HEAD and BED LONELY. Some of the more intimate acoustic moments
are also my faves, especially EVEN WHEN and LET ME DREAM.
Once again totally live and untouched. As pure as can be.
I know a lot of you love BUTTERFLY (and i thankyou deply for
it) but i feel that EVEN WHEN is possibly the best love song
I've ever written. I hope you guys feel it and like it as
much as i do. Anyway that's just a little insight into the
recording and songs on NO COMPROMISE."

Time For Goodbye's (Live in London) |
Mick
Hart — www.mickhart.com.au : "If You
Could has always been a special favourite of mine and has
been such a sweet part of this last period away from home.
It has really been a standout track in all it's different
formats and i felt strongly about putting down a fresh new
version.
The track was going to be a remix but after entering a London
studio with my buddy Dean Manning (from Leonardo's Bride)
in July, it felt best to just hit it all fresh and basically
re-record the whole thing whilst hanging onto some of the
beautiful subtle moments from the original version. Dean helped
in kind of a co-producing role and really we were just two
friends in there just having fun and painting a new and better
picture of something that had already been born. The new version
has this very cool 70's kind of drum loop sound to it (something
my drummer jerry and i had always talked about trying on it)
with a lot of the similar textures from the original, as well
as some beautiful haunting flavours and soundscapes that we
added to kind of take it somewhere dreamy and new. Basically
it has ended up sounding really really awesome and something
i am very proud to share with you all.
The 5 live tracks are all very special and influential moments
from the last 6 months worth of gigs o/s. Firstly 'Believe'
was from a Paris show in April that featured a whole new audience
of people coming along and was the first song of the night...
a beautiful and memorable introduction to kind of a new beginning.
'It's Alright', 'Find the Day' and 'Goodnight'
were all from a very memorable gig at the 12 Bar Club on London
in February. The first two were played on a gorgeous old wurlitzer
keyboard... and it felt like mellow heaven in there. 'Goodnight'
was the encore and a fitting finale to one of the best gigs
of the whole last year. The final track 'Time for Goodbyes'
is a completely new track that i had written on my lapsteel
in Paris just before i left in June. It was the first song
of the night at a return 12 Bar London show just last July
and was basically so new it was almost completely improvised.
The feeling in that gig at that moment is something i'll not
forget and the fact that we had it captured on tape is a timeless
treasure and it just felt right to include this as a taste
of what is to come." |

review 'Le Nouvel Observateur' (June 2003) : "After
a first album attracting Australian's attention, Mick Hart
is on the verge of conquering the world with 'upside down
in the full face of optimism'. This little brother of Jeff
Buckley (same feeling, same drawling voice and same skills
for songwriting) should quickly find a place on the international
scene." |
